Perks of a Sandstone Retaining Wall
As majority of you are already aware, but if you’re new here, we are all about SANDSTONE. It’s timeless, natural and truly aesthetically pleasing to look at on a Friday afternoon after work when you’re wanting to wind down. However, I wanted to share and explore with you what are the major advantages of a sandstone retaining wall excluding what I’ve mentioned above.
Now you’re maybe on the fence about if you should invest in sandstone around your property for a retaining wall, feature piece or maybe even something else. Here are some points I have found that have helped concrete our decision about spending money.
- Sandstone retaining walls may seem costly at first glace. Keep in mind this retaining wall (if built by a qualified and licenced tradesperson) will last a lifetime unlike inferior products such as timber.
- Sandstone retaining walls increases the value of your home. Since establishing sandstone around our property, our property manager has shared that this type of construction is on trend and is very appealing to buyers. It not only looks impressive, it increases the value of your property. Giving you more equity in your home. The natural stone gives off a well-manicured look and appeals too many.
- Zero Maintenance! Inferior retaining walls that involve ongoing maintenance may turn off buyers and they may perceive this as a hinderance. Which is something to keep in mind for the years to come when you may sell. Sandstone requires little maintenance. If your retaining wall will not see much sun, it may get a thin layer of fungi, algae or in time mould, which most areas get when positioned in the shade. This is removed with a pressure washer and only required maybe once a year, depending on your location.
-A timeless trend. As pointed out above, sandstone is on trend in 2022. The importance of this is that it’s a natural stone and is as timeless as other natural stones, such as travertine or granite. It is very versatile so if anything changes around the home or yard in the future, the chances are sandstone will marry in with almost anything as it has a natural appearance.
-High quality. Sandstone may be pricey, however, sandstones value for money is great. As it’s a natural stone, it can stand the test of time in the weather, unlike other materials which may need to be ripped down and re-constructed because of rotting or other factors.
-Variety. If you’re on a budget or wanting to go all-out, sandstone can fit in either of these boxes. Check out our blog “What retaining wall is most cost effective”. Sandstone boulders or C grade blocks fit into the budget friendly box, whereas someone who wants that perfect symmetrical look has the option of A grade blocks. The greatest thing about sandstone is that you have multiple options.
- Structural integrity. Now the purpose of a retaining wall is… exactly that! To retain the earth. Engineers that we have worked with in the past have shared they prefer sandstone logs as they’re very capable of retaining tones of dirt and rock.. for decades! They’ve been used commercially for years and there is a reason for this… their structural integrity which creates a safe, reliable space for its intended life span and to prevent failure – something other retaining wall options can not offer.
So, I hope you’ve gained some insight as to if sandstone is worth the investment. Please remember this blog is for educational purposes only and is not general advice. When building a sandstone retaining wall please rememeber to engage a licenced, qualified and insured Structural landscaper/builder to guarantee the strugural integrity of your wall.
